Slot (Mathematics)

A slit or narrow opening, usually for receiving something, such as a coin or letter. Also: a position or assignment.

(journalism) The inside area of the rim or semicircular copy desk, occupied by the supervisor of the copy editors. Also: the slot in a newspaper.

In a slot machine, a narrow opening through which coins or paper tickets are inserted and withdrawn. Also: a position or assignment, especially in a sequence or series. In a computer, a row of positions where data is stored. (United States) A small piece of metal or other material used to hold a paper clip or similar item in place. (United States) The space for a key on a keyboard or other electronic device.

The position in a type-wheel where the cylindrical end of a pin p fits, or is fitted into. Also: a slot in the journal of a typewriter or other mechanical device, into which a pin p is screwed.

One of a pair of parallel holes in an axle-box, into which a pinion engages. Also: a gear with such a hole, or a toothed wheel in which such a hole is cut.

In a slot game, a narrow opening in the reels through which coins or paper tickets are inserted. Also: a position or assignment, particularly in a sequence or series. In telecommunications, a circuit or link connecting two networks, enabling communication between them. Also: a set of connections that is available for use by a service.
