These games can be a combination of luck and skill, such as blackjack or roulette, or simply a game where players bet against the house (in this case, the casino), such as keno, craps or baccarat. Casinos also make money by offering a variety of complimentary items to “good” gamblers, called comps. These perks range from free hotel rooms and meals to discounted travel packages and show tickets.
Most casino games have a built in statistical advantage for the house, which is known as the edge or vig. Casinos use mathematicians and computer programs to calculate the house edge for each of their games. Then they employ people to manage the risks by calculating the expected value of each wager and adjusting the odds accordingly.
